Plan International Travel Around a Pending Application
Travel safely while a green card application is pending by understanding advance parole and the I-131 timeline.
- 1
Understand why travel is risky while pending
If you have a pending I-485 and leave the US without the right travel document, your application can be treated as abandoned. This is why people file Form I-131 for advance parole before making travel plans.
- 2
Check the I-131 processing time
Pull the I-131 time at https://egov.uscis.gov/processing-times. It runs around 6 to 7 months in early 2026, and some categories reach 19.5 months. That is a long lead time, so do not book non-refundable trips around an unapproved document.
- 3
Wait for the document in hand
Plan travel only after the advance parole document is approved and physically in your hands. A pending I-131 does not authorize travel, and leaving early can hurt your I-485. Many file I-765 and I-131 together as a combo card, so check whether both pieces are ready.

Time the trip and keep documents
Once approved, plan your trip and return well within the document's validity. Carry your advance parole and receipt notices when you re-enter. This is general guidance and a typical estimate, not legal advice, so verify your situation on the official tool.
